Chestnut tree of one hundred horses in Sant'Alfio

The Chestnut of the Hundred Horses, a tree approximately 4000 years old, is located on the slopes of Etna in the locality of Sant’Alfio just above Zafferana Etnea and a few minutes from Petralia hotel.

The tree is the protagonist of stories, legends and magic in which it is said that a queen with her entourage of 100 knights and ladies she was surprised by a storm during a hunting trip and found shelter under this immense and ancient chestnut tree.

To this day this chestnut tree enjoys its magnificent splendor and is on the Guinness world record list as the largest in the world.
It measures approximately 22 meters in height while its hollow trunk is 22 meters in circumference.
