The ancient rural Borgo Petralia on the Mount Etna
“I was looking for a place where I could create a future for my children, and it was the place that found me”
“The first time I entered the property, unravelling through the weeds and wild walnut, I sensed that I had found the actual ancient rural Borgo Petralia, something more extraordinary than what I was looking for”.
It was an old farmhouse from the 1930s that belonged to a family with the same surname Petralia.
‘What a strange fate,’ I thought.
It was Mr. Giarrusso, Mrs. Petralia’s husband, the so-called ‘Massaro’ (in Sicilian dialect) of the Borgo who, as in the Middle Ages, was in charge of managing the masseria by renting the cottages to peasant families and dividing up their tasks and specific roles.
Abandoned for more than 40 years, it was me the one who found it in 2002 and recognised its infinite beauty.Click here to see the video made in 2004 by my wife Scorciapino Giuseppina before the renovation:
